Climate protection with carbon footprints
- Corporate Carbon Footprints (CCF) for sites in Germany (Frankfurt, Ludwigshafen) and the Netherlands (Rotterdam)
- Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) for products at sites in Germany (Ludwigshafen) and the Netherlands (Rotterdam)

Why Almatis trusts in ÖKOTEC
“ÖKOTEC’s expertise in calculating footprints was invaluable. We are continuing our partnership with the development of a climate strategy and a sustainability report.”

The Challenge
ALMATIS produces aluminum oxides as raw materials for ceramic and refractory applications as well as chemical, construction and industrial specialty applications. Production facilities are located in Germany, Netherlands, USA, China, India and Japan. To strengthen competitiveness and to meet customer requirements, PCFs and CCFs were calculated. Due to the complexity of the product portfolio, external expertise was required.
Benefits
- Precise knowledge of corporate and product-specific greenhouse gas emissions, which allows for transparent external communication
- Identification of levers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scopes 1 to 3
The calculation of a Corporate Carbon Footprint entailed
- Realization of workshops to identify and quantify sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) within the company
- Plausibility check to ensure data quality
- Matching of activity data with appropriate emission factors to determine specific emissions
- Presentation of greenhouse gas emissions for two countries and three locations, each classified in Scope 1 to 3
The calculation of a Product Carbon Footprint (cradle to gate) entailed
- Realization of workshops to identify and quantify greenhouse gas sources from production processes (PCF).
- Expert analysis of emissions from various production facilities
- Modeling of production processes with our PCF tool
- Plausibility check to ensure data quality
- Matching of activity data with suitable emission factors to determine specific product emissions (t CO2e/t product)
