In its efforts at limiting the global rise in temperature, the private sector is called upon to implement innovative solutions toward a CO2-neutral economy. Many questions arise during planning and implementation, such as
Which procedure is suitable for the systematic reduction of CO2 emissions – up to and including the climate neutrality of products and business activities?
How do I identify, assess, and control climate-related risks?
What needs to be taken into account when planning the appropriate actions and investment decisions? In particular regarding complexity and uncertainties of the future, such as the effects of climate change, CO2 price development or availability of renewable energies?
ÖKOTEC supports you in meeting your objectives and needs, providing an interdisciplinary team of experts, methods, and tools for CO2 reduction and avoidance. Services include strategy workshops, preparation of the CO2 balance according to GHG protocol/DIN EN ISO 14064, product-specific footprints in real time or concepts for CO2-neutral supply. Analysis of potential/measures for CO2 reduction
We analyze potentials at the site or within the concern to reduce or avoid CO2 emissions. Our experts factor in all CO2-relevant processes for the systematic optimization of the overall operation. For this purpose, an analysis of the existing data is performed in combination with an on-site assessment.
The result of the analysis is a comprehensive list of recommended actions, including information on savings (tons of CO2 and €), investments and profitability. Simple immediate measures can often be implemented promptly without further planning.
Concepts for CO2-neutral supply
We leverage CO2 and efficiency potentials through our interdisciplinary and systematic approach. In order to optimize existing plant equipment or construction planning, we develop CO2-neutral or reduced solutions for supply and media distribution (e.g. heating and cooling) for our customers.
In doing so, we factor in all relevant areas: Energy consumption, production and distribution of energy media, and optimization of energy supply. We also ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations (e.g. EU F-Gas Regulation 517/2014), key technologies (e.g. heat pumps) and the latest developments on the market.
Note: Please note that – regardless of all efficiency and CO2 reduction measures – not all emissions can be avoided on your own. Offsetting or climate neutrality is possible by supporting recognized climate protection projects (including the Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard). We will be glad to advise you on this subject, also in cooperation with partners.
Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)
The PCF refers to the balance of GHG emissions over a product’s entire life cycle. It increases transparency and helps to reduce GHG emissions in the manufacturinge, use, and disposal of products. Our service and software package “CO2Realtime – Product Carbon Footprint in real time” helps to balance all GHG emissions along the production line. The methodical and digital procedure supports companies in identifying energy-intensive processes and exploiting savings potentials.
Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF)
The CCF is comprised of all GHG emissions generated in the course of a company’s operations. There are various standards for determining the CCF. We recommend the use of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and DIN EN ISO 14064 to make the efficiency and progress of CO2 reduction transparent and to track it. GHG emissions* must be considered and determined according to the scopes**. How to proceed:
Clarification of the setting and organization
(Data) selection of climate-impacting emissions (including energy consumption data, production quantities, purchased raw materials, etc.)
Research and recording of required emissions as primary data or from secondary databases
Preparation of a GHG balance sheet
Assessment of the significance of different emission sources and categories
Identification of CO2-relevant hotspots
Summary of the findings
Optional: Verification of the CCF via an external audit
Climate Change Strategy
Climate management and the reduction of emissions are major aspects of sustainable development, particularly with regard to the Paris Convention and the 2°C target. Companies have a huge responsibility in reducing GHG emissions by 80 to 95 percent by 2050. Our experts accompany you every step of the way in developing a credible, practical and sustainable climate strategy – as the basis for successful implementation and transparent internal and external communication.
Clarification of objectives and setting
Recording climate-impacting emissions, preparation of GHG balance sheet (steps see CCF)
Assessing significance of emission sources and defining goals and actions to be taken
Developing a climate target based on tailored methods or methods of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBT) objective
Developing and implementing CO2-reducing measures, including increasing the energy efficiency of process technologies and procedures, concepts for CO2-neutral supply, integration of renewable energies
Process and management: Establishing an indicator-based monitoring system to check the effectiveness of the measures and the degree to which objectives have been achieved.
Verifying and communicating: Having credibility certified through external audits and managing internal and external communication.
Key figures and software
For tracking the effectiveness of both efficiency improvement and CO2 reduction efforts, we offer you well-founded and field-tested methods, our software solution EnEffCo® and accompanying consulting services.
On behalf of the BMU (German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) ÖKOTEC has developed a methodology for the compilation of energy performance indicators to track and improve companies’ energy efficiency. This methodology ensures transparency in primary energy consumption, CO2 emissions and costs throughout the value creation process. It also allows monitoring, benchmarking and verification of improvement and savings.
Our proprietary software solution EnEffCo® offers you an innovative platform for the digitalization of your energy and CO2 management:
CO2 accounting in compliance with the GHG protocol,
ISO 14064 (from factory level to the entire value chain)
Collecting and monitoring GHG emissions (scope 1)
Determining and monitoring the PCF in compliance with ISO 14067 (from factory level to the entire value chain)
Collecting a product-exact PCF in real time along the own value chain (stationary and batch processes)
Networks
ÖKOTEC has initiated and supported more than 40 networks for energy efficiency. We are currently managing 10 networks within the framework of the Initiative for Energy Efficiency Networks (IEEN). There are several networks in planning for various regions and a variety of sectors, which will address not only energy efficiency but also climate management issues.
Granting of measures and projects via subsidies
We assist you with our expert knowledge in the successful development of measures, implementation support, and also in the examination of support programs. For example, the “Germany makes it efficient” campaign, in wich the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy offers various funding modules for industrial and commercial enterprises (classic and competition), and the Federal Ministry of the Environment offers the “Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Directive”.

* When we refer to “CO2”, we consider greenhouse gas emissions separately in accordance with ISO 14064 or the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), partially halogenated fluorocarbons (H-FKW/HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC/PFC), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). In order to compare different greenhouse gases, the potentials of these gases are defined as CO2 equivalents. For additional information go to: United Nations Climate Change (UNFCCC) / Global Warming Potentials (IPCC Second Assessment Report, Link.)
** Scope 1 includes direct emissions that are the responsibility of the company; Scope 2 includes emissions caused by energy purchased from third parties; Scope 3 includes upstream and downstream emissions caused by inputs, outsourced activities, disposal, etc. outside of the facility under review.
